Description

Jef (Sjef/Joseph)) Courtens (Maastricht 1923 – aldaar 2009) he started as a sculptor in 1943, after completing the evening education of the secondary applied arts school in Maastricht. He was a student of Charles Vos. His great examples were the sculptors Maillol, Rodin, Zadkine and Manzù. To escape the Arbeitseinsatz during the Second World War, Jef went to work at the ASTRA – ‘Atelier voor kunst-keramiek’ – (Maastricht 1938 – 1954), together with Rob Stultiens and Piet Killaars.
